Abstract

According to definition, febrile seizures — benign, age-dependent, genetically predisposed condition in which the brain is susceptible to epileptic seizures, occurring in response to the fever. The article presents the outcome and transformation of febrile seizures in children by data of Svt. Luka's Institute of child neurology & epilepsy. The authors found, thatfebrile seizures can occur at onset of 21 epileptic syndromes with different etiologic factors and outcome. The clinical characteristics, EEG and neuroimaging data, as well as the effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs and prognosis of differentforms of epilepsy with febrile seizures in history are described in detail.

Abstract

Hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia-epilepsy syndrome (HHE syndrome) — polyetiologic disease, with onset in childhood, characterized by the triad of symptoms: 1) prolonged convulsive seizures (usually on background of fever), involving one half of the body (hemiconvulsions); 2) acute hemiparesis occurring immediately after seizures (on the side of convulsions); 3) symptomatic focal epilepsy, occurring in the sequel. The authors discuss in detail different aspects of the disease, including etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic approaches, differential diagnosis, and approaches to treatment (including prevention and therapy of the disease) and outcome.

Abstract

The most important characteristics of resistant epilepsy forms, associated with fever-provoked (febrile) epileptic seizures (Dravet syndrome, DESC — Devastating epileptic encephalopathy in school-aged children, HHE — hemiconvul- sion-hemiplegia-epilepsy syndrome) are proposed. For every syndrome all the main aspects of disease are considered in detail: aetiology and pathogenesis, clinical picture, including of characteristics of seizures, EEG, neuroimaging, therapeutic approachers and prognosis.

Abstract

A review is devoted to the aspects of efficacy, safety and tolerability of lamotrigine in the treatment of epilepsy. Special emphasis is placed on the results of comparative studies, on such aspects of the treatment as the impact of the drug on cognitivefunction and quality of life. Especially the benefits of lamotrigine in children and adolescents are discussed in detail. Also indicationsfor using lamotrigine according to the international standards for treatment of epilepsy are considered.
