Andrey S. Petrukhin was born on November 7, 1944, in Moscow. A brilliant scientist who raised from a clinical physician to Professor, Full Member of the World Association of Child Neurologists and the European Epilepsy Academy, Member of the Royal Medical Society.
In joint trips with his father who restored destroyed towns and villages after the war, he very early realized the role of hard work of people who raised their homes from ruins and renovated the life interrupted with the war.
In 1962, he was admitted to the N.I. Pirogov Moscow State Medical Institute of the Lenin order and successfully graduated from in 1968 with the specialty of pediatrics. During the studies, he met his future wife, a wonderful practical pediatrician Natalia I. Obreimova (daughter of world-known Academician, physicist Ivan V. Obreimov).
During his study in institute, Andrey actively participated in students' scientific groups of obstetrics, gynecology, and radiology; he showed himself as a student deeply interested in medicine. The studies of neural diseases gave him the chance to meet Levon O. Badalyan, an outstanding neurologist. By that time (it was September of 1963), Levon arranged the independent course of child neurology with the N.I. Pirogov 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute of the Lenin order. In 1964, this course was transformed into the Department of neural diseases of the pediatric faculty. Having intuition for the search of talented scientists, Levon invited a young graduate and a member of the Student Scientific Society, Andrey Petrukhin, to be a member of the Department in 1968. In 1970, he entered the Post-Graduate Department, and there, on the basis of Pediatric Municipal Hospital No. 35 under the management of L.O. Badalyan and L.T. Zhurba, he successfully defended the Ph.D. thesis on the topic of "Motor Dysfunctions of Children after Intrauterine Hypoxia and Asphyxia at Birth".
At the same time, young doctor Andrey S. Petrukhin was developing the methodology of electroneuromyography with children of the early age and determining the normative indicators in various age periods. As a result of careful studies, unique data were received regarding age parameters of speed of conveying electric excitation of peripheral nerves in children at the first year of life.
While conveying active scientific activity, A.S. Petrukhin was working at the Ambulance Station and was promoted from paramedic to Chief Physician.
In 1973, after graduating from the Post-graduate Department, Andrey took the decision to work in Vladivostok. At that time, pediatric faculty of the Vladivostok State Medical Institute was opened and young teaching staff was of actual demand. From 1973 to 1976, A.S. Petrukhin was the Assistant of the Department of neural diseases of the Vladivostok State Medical Institute where he actively dealt with problems of genetics, defects, and anomalies of development of the brain and nuclear dysplasia.
In 1976, after returning from Vladivostok and already being an experienced doctor, he became the chief research assistant of the laboratory of clinical genetics of the N.I. Pirogov 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute of the Lenin order. It was exactly there, where Dr. Petrukhin concentrated his great previous experience from 1976 to 1991, namely: knowledge of perinatology as well as the data on the effect of radiation on the human organism. Deep studies were performed on the Semipalatinsk ground (Kazakhstan) as well as in the area of the Chernobyl disaster when studying the congenital abnormalities among residents of the regions. Knowledge in radiology were useful to him in working with the computed tomography unit, first in Russia. Andrey took active part not only in installation of the tomography unit on the basis of the Morozovskaya Pediatric Hospital of Moscow but also performed independent research of the brain of children and analyzed the results. In 1980, together with L.O. Badalyan, he started dealing with the new scientific topics while investigating malformations of the brain of children, having laid the bases of clinical and neuroimaging diagnostics in neurology. Knowledge in the field of obstetrics and perinatology allowed the scientist to assess the effect of various teratogenic factors on the developing brain objectively.
In 1989, all this huge experience of work and the studies performed in the various fields of medicine resulted as a fundamental work – doctor's thesis on the topic of "Brain Dysgenesis". Being advanced as related to foreign scientists by ten years, A.S. Petrukhin created the concept of violations of neural migration as well as developed the bases of portrait diagnostics in studying hereditary syndromes under the management of Academician Badlayan. Results received in this work are actual until now.
In September 1991, already being an MD, Andrey became a Professor of the newly organized Department of clinical genetics of Faculty of Continuing Medical Education of the Russian State Medical University.
Since December 1994, after the death of Academician L.O. Badalyan, A.S. Petrukhin Headed the Department of neural diseases of the pediatric faculty of the N.I. Pirogov RSMU. At the Department, he continued and actively developed the research work in various field of neurology. The capable scientific personnel of the Department developed the classification of neural and muscular diseases of children, arranged the neural and muscular center and the group for studying epilepsy of children that took the leading world positions. At various times, the Department of neural diseases was visited by the following leading world neurologists who also read lectures at it: Edward H. Moser (USA), S. Otahara, I. Suzuki (Japan), P. Wolf, Hans-Eric Boenigk, H. Holthauzen (Germany), O. Dulac, P. Jenton, C. Dravet (France), R. Guerrinin (Italy), Raily Ricconen (Finland), and other outstanding scientists.
Under the management of A.S. Petrukhin, the first Russian national program for treatment of epilepsy of children and classification of perinatal lesions of the nervous system was created. The Department has leading positions in the world in the field of child neurology, and in April 1998, the first Eastern European school for diagnostics and treatment of epilepsy of children under the supervision of the ICNA was arranged with the effort of Professor A.S. Petrukhin. Leading scientists that were child neurologists from Europe, USA, and Japan took part in this conference.
The first laboratory of video ECG monitoring in the CIS was formed at the Department (Professor K.Y. Mukhin, Associate Professors L. Y. Glukhova and M. B. Mironov), and the program of pre-surgery diagnostics of epilepsy (Associate Professor V. A. Chadayev) was developed.
At present, students of Professor Petrukhin work as neurologist in various countries of the world, namely: UK, Netherlands, Israel, USA.
Under the management of A.S. Petrukhin, protocols of treatment of various forms of epilepsy which are actively introduced into a modern doctor's practice. Schools of epileptology and epileptological centers were created for doctors in many regions of Russia, which allowed patients to get qualified medical aid. From 2003 to 2009, regular classes were held for parents regarding epileptology for parents.
Andrey published over 400 articles on many actual problems of neurology in various journals both in Russia and abroad. His acquaintance with world's leading scientists allows exchanging experience during personal meetings and at international conferences. He gave lectures and provided scientific reports in England (Bath), Germany (Kiel, Vogtareuth), Italy (Florence), USA (Baltimore) and other countries.
In 2000, Mr. Petrukhin together with employees of the Department published the modern fundamental manual for epilepsy called "Epilepsy in Childhood", first in Russia. The monograph contains exhaustive and exact descriptions of the essentials of epileptology, its history, medical signs of epileptic seizures, diagnostics of epileptic syndromes, data of electroencephalography, neuroimaging, and methods of treatment. In 2000, the book of Professor K.Yu. Mukhin and A.S. Petrukhin called "Ideopathic Forms of Epilepsy: Systematics, Diagnostics, Therapy" was also published. It provides complete systematization of all forms of generalized and focal idiopathic epilepsy in accordance with international criteria.
With realization of the importance of studying of essentials of pathologies of the nervous system of children, Andrey issued one more book in 2004: the textbook called "Childhood Neurology". This textbook contains modern data of the general and specific neurology of childhood, it gives detailed embriogenesis and its disorders, as well as contains the sections of fundamental neurology including neurochemistry, principles and methods of diagnostics of diseases. It also reveals all sections of clinical childhood neurology in the evolution and age aspect. The same year was the year of publishing (together with his students, K.Yu. Mukhin and L.Yu. Glukhova) of the atlas in clinical electroencephalography called "Epilepsy. Atlas of Electric Clinical Semiology", first in the CIS. This atlas is the reference book for many neurologists and neurophysicists.
In 2008, a fundamental work under the editorship of A.S. Petrukhin was published, "Clinical Child Neurology". This handbook that contains over 1.000 pages of texts, authentic figures and tables, still has no analogues in our country regarding the scale and scope of revealing the issue. The handbook contains the details of ethics and deontological issues in neurology, most modern details of pathogenesis of diseases of the nervous system, as well as classical description of topical diagnostics in neurology. For the first time ever, the whole specter of perinatal pathology of the nervous system was reviewed from the evolution and genetic position.
In 2009, A.S. Petrukhin published the textbook called "Child Neurology" in 2 volumes that was recommended as a basic textbook for students of all institutions of higher medical education in Russia.
In connection with reduction of personnel and liquidation of the Faculty of Continuing Medical Education in the N.I. Pirogov Russian State Medical University, Andrey left the Department of Neurology of the pediatric faculty and continued his therapeutic, research, and teaching work in the St. Luka's Institute of Child Neurology and Epilepsy (under the management of Professor K.Yu. Mukhin) that was arranged by the closest students and colleagues of the Professor. Andrey performs active clinical work, gives lectures in many cities of Russia and the CIS, renders aid in arranging of neurological and rehabilitation service in the Republic of Azerbaijan. For many years, he has remained the consulting neurologist of Child Psychiatric Hospital No. 6 of Moscow. In August 2014, a remarkable event took place: Andrey, together with his students (K.Yu. Mukhin, A.A. Kholin, M.B. Mironov) issued a fundamental monograph in English devoted to epileptic encephalopathies. This work issued by a leading medical publishing house (John Libbey) is an advancing phenomenon and a colossal contribution of Russian scientists into the world's epileptology. At present, there are no analogues of this monograph.
In 2012, A.S. Petrukhin was invited by Academician E.I. Gusev to return to the N.I. Pirogov Russian State Medical University as a Professor of the Department of Neurology, neurosurgery, and medical genetics of the therapeutic faculty. He continued the work on his favorite topic, that is, medical genetics and hereditary diseases of the nervous system, as well as teaching and clinical work.
A.S. Petrukhin is a remarkable scientist and doctor that can set the diagnosis at once, as soon as the patient walks into the door of his office. He is one of very few people who can set the diagnosis of very rare diseases that have almost no descriptions in world's references. He is also a very well developed and educated person. Andrey has perfect knowledge of arts, music, literature, he is interested in theater and particularly likes opera. He is also interested in mineralogy, botany, aircraft building, model cars, and radios. He is acquainted with many artists in our country and abroad. Many of the latter visited meetings of the Students' Scientific Group of the Department of Nervous Diseases of the Pediatric Faculty that was one of the most popular groups at the N.I. Pirogov Russian State Medical University.
