Abstract

The article is devoted to rare and unique type of epileptic seizures – inhibitory motor seizures, characterized by the inability to execute a voluntary movement with preserved consciousness. The exact prevalence of this type of seizures is not known, but many cases are unrecognized or non-correctly diagnosed as Todd's paralysis. Therefore practical doctors should know the clinical and electroencephalographic characteristics of this type of seizures and
take them into account in the differential diagnoses . The authors presented a detailed review of the literature, including the historical data, etiology, pathogenesis and proposed mechanisms of formation of inhibitory motor seizures, clinical and EEG characteristics, therapeutic approaches. Antiepileptic drugs of choice used in the treatment of inhibitory motor seizures are valproic acid (preferably depakine chronosphere – original prolonged form of valproate).
The authors also presented their observations of patients with inhibitory motor seizures.

Abstract

The electroencephalographic activating methods are widely used during the EEG investigation to detect the reactivity of normal electric activity of the brain and for provocation of pathological (especially epileptiform) activity. The most common activating procedures are intermittent photic stimulation, hyperventilation, the probe "opening – closing" of the eyes, sleep deprivation and sleep. The more different activation methods are used during EEG investigation the more information EEG-method can propose in diagnostics of various pathological conditions , especially epilepsy, since epileptiform activity typically occur under certain conditions. In practice it is desirable to apply the activating procedures that are easily achievable with the available equipment and without possible adverse effects for the patients. The use of activating methods during EEG helps to establish correct diagnosis and to improve the efficacy of the treatment. The authors proposed a detailed review, devoted to the clinical aspects of these activating methods, combined with their own illustrations of EEG- responses to a variety of activating procedures.

Abstract

Autism can occur in combination with chromosomal and genetic syndromes, malformations of the brain, metabolic diseases, etc. In this regard, currently adopted the term «atypical» or «syndromic» autism – autism, which is a symptom of another disease. Genetic and chromosomal causes account for 25-50% of cases of autism. The authors presented a detailed review of the literature devoted to the genetic aspects of autism. The article discusses known hereditary diseases, manifested as autistic disorder, classification of genes-candidates of autism, the theory of autism pathogenesis, approaches to the diagnosis, as well as the problems associated with genetic counseling for patients with autism.
