We emphasize that BEDC are not specific for both idiopathic (genetic) focal epilepsy and epilepsy in general. BEDC can be observed in a number of various disorders and also in neurologically healthy children. We developed a detailed classification of BEDC-associated states that are divided into 3 groups: neurologically healthy children, children with various forms of epilepsy, and patients with various neurological disorders without epilepsy. We found that there are 2 main factors responsible for BEDC in electroencephalogram: genetic predisposition and white matter lesions, usually occurring during the antenatal or perinatal period. BEDC should be considered rather a manifestation of congenital abnormalities in brain maturation than a marker of epilepsy. We also discuss the need for therapy in patients with BEDC-associated states.</p>
<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p/></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>benign epileptiform discharges of childhood</kwd><kwd>idiopathic (genetic) focal epilepsy</kwd><kwd>focal childhood epilepsy with structural brain changes and BEDC in electroencephalogram</kwd><kwd>cognitive epileptiform disintegration</kwd><kwd>leukopathy</kwd><kwd>periventricular leukomalacia</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>доброкачественные эпилептиформные паттерны детства</kwd><kwd>идиопатическая (генетическая) фокальная эпилепсия</kwd><kwd>фокальная эпилепсия детства со структурными изменениями в мозге и ДЭПД на электроэнцефалограмме</kwd><kwd>когнитивная эпилептиформная дезинтеграция</kwd><kwd>лейкопатия</kwd><kwd>перивентрикулярная лейкомаляция</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Alikhanov A.A., Mukhin K.Yu., Petrukhin A.S. et al.
